ONES TO WATCH: LUTON TOWN

Our second away game in three days comes against Luton Town, a side who have struggled a bit since dropping down from the Premier League last season, here are five of their players to watch out for during the match.

THOMAS KAMINSKI (GK)

Luton’s number one goalkeeper is 32-year-old (it’s actually his birthday today) Belgium international Thomas Kaminski. Kaminski was recruited by the Hatters in August 2023 and played in all 38 of their league fixtures last season. Although he did concede a total of 85 goals (only Sheffield United with 104 goals against had a worse defensive record) he would at least come away from the campaign with a Save of the Month award for November 2023 and this save versus Crystal Palace eventually also won him the Premier League Save of the Season. Highly experienced, he’s played in Belgium, Cyprus and Denmark as well as England, winning league two Belgian Pro Leagues with Anderlecht in 2013 and 2014 and a Danish Superliga in 2016 with Copenhagen (plus two Belgian Super Cups and a Danish Cup at the same clubs for good measure). Additionally he was Blackburn Rovers’ Player of the Season in 2020/21 and has kept two clean sheets out of nine matches in the current season.

ALFIE DOUGHTY (LWB)

Born in London in 1999, Doughty came through the Charlton Athletic Academy and would make his first appearances in senior football for non league sides Kingstonian and Bromley during loan spells, at the former of those he scored twice on his league debut. The next season he’d become a regular feature for Charlton’s senior team and won their Young Player of the Season Year as the Addicks were relegated to League One. This good form led to Stoke City signing him on a permanent basis but he struggled for gametime during his time there, making just 16 appearances for them. A loan spell at Cardiff City should have offered a fresh start, however that was cut short by an injury after just nine matches. Luton signed him in June 2022 and he played a key role in their promotion to the top flight in 2023, assisting their second goal in the second leg of the playoffs. Last season he won the EFL Cup Goal of the Round for the second round and assisted a Carlton Morris goal that won his team their first ever Premier League victory. Doughty has turned out for all 11 of Luton’s games in all competitions this campaign.

JORDAN CLARK (AM)

Clark has been in the EFL for years, playing for Barnsley, Chesterfield, Scunthorpe United, Shrewsbury Town, Accrington Stanley and, of course, Luton Town across the Championship, League One and Two (he’s also played briefly in the Conference Premier). With Shrewsbury he helped them to automatic promotion from League Two and with Accrington Stanley (a team he very nearly made 200 appearances for) he won the League Two title and their Player of the Season award the next year. His impact at Luton has also been felt, he scored in the playoff final and scored a penalty in the shootout as well and Clark is almost at the 150 game milestone for his current side.

CARLTON MORRIS (ST)

Morris is Luton’s top scorer this season as of right now, with three goals in eight matches and an assist in the League Cup. When he’s finding the back of the net, Luton tend to win. His three goals have come in the form of a brace at home to Watford and a late strike versus Sheffield Wednesday to win the game. He did start his footballing life out at Norwich City, but managed just one appearance for them during his time playing senior football between 2014 and 2021. Instead he had lots and lots of loan spells, at Oxford United, York City, Hamilton Academical, Rotherham United, Shrewsbury Town, Rotherham again and then two consecutive spells at Milton Keynes Dons. He finally moved to a club permanently in January 2021, moving to Barnsley and then he went back down south to Luton in July 2022 and made an instant impact at his new home. Morris won the Championship Player of the Month for September 2022 and also featured in the PFA Team of the Year for the Championship as the Hatters were promoted to the top flight, scoring 20 goals across the season. He also made club history when he scored Luton’s first ever Premier League goal in August 2023 and the aforementioned goal that won them their first Premier League win against Everton the following month.

VICTOR MOSES (RWB)

Moses has a wonderful CV for a Championship player. Internationally, he can boast 38 caps, 12 goals and an Africa Cup of Nations for Nigeria and, whilst he was registered with England, he was the top scorer at the 2007 U17 European Championship. At club level, he’s won a Premier League title, an FA Cup and two Europa Leagues at Chelsea and a Russian Cup at Spartak Moscow. In addition to Russia and England, he’s also plied his trade in Turkey and Italy. At the age of 33 now, he’s returned to the league where his senior career began, the Championship, with him previously making his debut for Crystal Palace aged 16 in the second tier in 2007.
