LOANWATCH

It’s the international break, so it’s time to take a look at how the players we’ve sent out on loan have been getting on at their temporary homes. We currently have nine away in four different countries.

NATHAN BISHOP: WYCOMBE WANDERERS

Nathan Bishop only played for us twice last season, therefore it’s no surprise he’s been loaned out to League One Wycombe in a bid for more game time. The shot stopper already has more minutes under his belt than he did for the entirety of the previous campaign, he;s turned out for the Chairboys on three occasions so far. Unfortunately, he shipped six in his two League One games but he did manage to keep a clean sheet in an EFL Cup match against Northampton Town, with his team down to ten men for the last 12 minutes. He seems to be behind Argentine Franco Ravizzoli in the pecking order now, as he’s played their last three fixtures and kept two clean sheets.

MATTY YOUNG: SALFORD CITY

The other goalkeeper we’ve loaned out is Matty Young and he’s at League Two Salford City. He’s only 17 and as such isn’t going to be the number one at his loan club, his involvement so far has been in an EFL Cup match against Doncaster City and an EFL Trophy game versus Port Vale. He wasn’t able to keep a clean sheet in either of those, however he’s still going to get far more game time for Salford than he would here.

OLIVER BAINBRIDGE: KILMARNOCK

Bainbridge is a 19-year-old left back and this is his first go at senior football. He was thrown right in the deep end as well, making his debut away to Celtic. Oliver then kept a clean sheet later in August in the second leg of a Europa Conference League qualifier away to Norwegian side Tromsø, allowing Kilmarnock to progress to the next round. Next he was handed another tricky job, coming off the bench in a League Cup match away to Motherwell with his team down to ten men, they were narrowly defeated 1-0 after extra time. Since then he’s had two brief cameos against København and Aberdeen.

JAY MATETE: BOLTON WANDERERS

This is Matete’s third loan spell to the third tier whilst on the books at Sunderland and his last two teams (Plymouth Argyle and Oxford United) have both ended the season in promotion. It doesn’t look like it’s headed that way for Bolton, but it is still early days. He’s featured in four League One games so far, all of which have been as a substitute and the other three games have been starts in cup competitions where he’s played well. Jay scored a penalty in a shootout in the first round of the League Cup against Mansfield Town and he started in their second round clash against Shrewsbury Town, in which Bolton won 2-0. Most recently, Matete assisted his team’s second goal in a 3-2 win over Barrow in an EFL Trophy fixture.

BEN MIDDLEMAS: SOUTH SHIELDS

Middlemas is also 19 and also getting his first taste of senior football, he’s doing it in the form of a month-long loan spell with local National League North club South Shields. He made a great first impression and scored on his debut in a 4-1 win away to Oxford City and has since started in the next three of Shield’s games, taking his total number of appearances to four. The loan deal is scheduled to end on the 22nd September.

NECTARIOS TRIANTIS: HIBERNIAN

Our central defender turned midfielder has returned to Hibernian for a second loan spell, after his first one went very well. He’s played one game of one game available so far, against Kilmarnock and did fantastically well, completing the most dribbles and winning the most duels in the fixture. The Australian was unlucky not to score as well as he struck the woodwork. Hibs fans were more than pleased with his second debut and there were more than a few hoping he’d move to Edinburgh in a permanent manner.

PIERRE EKWAH, TIMOTHÉE PEMBÉLÉ AND LUÍS SEMEDO: SAINT-ÉTIENNE, LE HAVRE AND JUVENTUS NEXT GEN

All three of these players were loaned out on Deadline Day (Semedo was announced afterwards) and haven’t had the chance to turn out for their new teams just yet. Both Ekwah and Semedo have an option in their deal to make it permanent come the end of the season. Their clubs’ next fixture they can all actually play in are as follows:

PIERRE EKWAH (SAINT-ÉTIENNE): LILLE (LIGUE 1, H), FRIDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER, 19:45

TIMOTHÉE PEMBÉLÉ (LE HAVRE): TOULOUSE (LIGUE 1, A), SUNDAY 15TH SEPTEMBER, 16:00

LUÍS SEMEDO (JUVENTUS NEXT GEN): CATANIA (SERIE C, GROUP C, H), SATURDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER, 17:30
