BORN ON THIS DAY: ALEX BASS

Born on this day in 1998 is Alex Bass. The shot stopper arrived on Wearside from the South Coast, when he signed from Portsmouth last summer.

Born in Eastleigh, Alex Bass progressed through Portsmouth’s youth ranks, and he first appeared on the bench on the 7th of March 2015. Bass was only 16 at the time, and he went on to feature on Pompey's bench another 36 times. On the 9th of August 2016, He finally made his debut in a 3-2 EFL Cup defeat to Coventry City.

Bass was then loaned out to Southern League South and West side Salisbury, for the 16/17 campaign. He made 37 appearances for the Whites, before returning to Portsmouth at the end of the season. He made his first league start for Pompey, on the 5th of May 2018. The young keeper kept a clean sheet in Portsmouth’s 2-0 home win against Peterborough, in what was the final game of the 17/18 season.

On July 9th 2018, Bass signed a new three-year deal at Portsmouth. He was loaned out to National League South side Torquay United. He only made eight appearances for the Gulls, before returning to Portsmouth on the 13th of December that same year. The young goalkeeper was a part of Portsmouth’s check trade trophy winning squad that beat Sunderland 5-4 on penalties.

Alex Bass went on to feature for Portsmouth in the 19/20 season, where he made 15 appearances. He even played in both legs of the league one play offs. Unfortunately, Pompey lost 5-4 on penalties against Oxford United and Bass was denied the opportunity to play at Wembley.

With Portsmouth stuck in League One, Bass was kept as a back up keeper before being sent out to Southend United on an emergency loan, for the remainder of the 20/21 season. Bass returned and was then loaned out to League Two Bradford City in January 2022, he went on to make 21 appearances for the Bantams.

On the 26th of July 2022, Alex Bass made a surprising switch to Wearside. He has mainly been a back up goalkeeper, with Anthony Patterson's good performances keeping him out the side. However, he did play in the EFL Cup against Sheffield Wednesday last August. Sunderland lost that game 2-0. Not to mention, he also scored a controversial handball goal for Sunderland's under 21s, where he equalised last second against Newcastle's U21s. Hopefully, Bass can find his feet somewhere and have a long and successful career.
