BALLARD ON DEBUT

Daniel Ballard had an impressive debut on Sunday, but he was more impressed by the attendance and atmosphere which left him waiting eagerly for the next game.

BIG STEP UP

"Of course it's a big step up from League One and, as you saw, I think a lot of games throughout this season are going to be very similar. Teams don't drop off towards the end of the game, they ramp it up and you see they used four subs on Sunday and have a great quality squad.”

GOOD PERFORMANCE, DISAPPOINTING RESULT

"It's about keeping your concentration, keep fighting every game and every game goes down to the wire. We are a little bit disappointed with the result. We wanted to start off on the front foot with a win and give the fans three points but I thought our performance was very good, we went toe-to-toe and then naturally when you are winning you drop deeper in the game and in this league it's about grinding out results. I'm sure there will be similar scenarios to that one."

OUTSTANDING SUPPORT

"First of all I was taken back a bit by the crowd and the stadium. I've not really played in front of many atmospheres like that, especially at home. I was really surprised by that and it gives you a boost that I haven't really had before. I have played in front of big crowds before but it's usually the opposition fans. To have them on your side I wasn't really nervous, it's a big boost and they really do help. There are not many clubs with the sort of ambition and history that Sunderland have, and of course the fanbase is huge.”

AIMING TO IMPRESS

"So if I can go and showcase my stuff in front of 40,000 people, of course that's something I would love to do. To have a big fanbase behind you there is no better feeling so hopefully I can go and put in some good performances, work extremely hard and get them on our side."

MORE PRESSURE AT SAFC

"Of course there is more pressure than maybe going to other clubs but I'm sure they pick the players they believe can take that challenge on. If you are willing to deal with it and willing to work hard it can only work in your favour. From my experience on Sunday, I'm excited for the next game. It will be a long season and we are on our way now."
