Since my retirement determined to write my own history of the football club. There are now numerous publications regarding Sunderland, some remarkably informative, and covering a wide range of topics. I trust that this book succeeds as a favourable alternative in providing a complete, accurate, and indeed unbiased view of the club over such a long period.
I have principally used archived newspaper material, my collection of battered memorabilia and a wealth of football books, in particular those including the autobiographies of past players and managers. Most importantly, I have provided personal recollections in an attempt to place the reader at the heart of events.
